However, horsemen note several factors that could have skewed Entin’s results. Fillies and mares often receive weight “allowances” in races open to both males and females. A female winner in open company would be carrying three pounds less than male competitors.
But Entin said that her study allowed for weight differences. When asked why fewer female runners win important races, in particular the American classics, Entin suggests that fewer females are entered in such demanding races early in their 3-year-old year. Plus, successful race mares are at a premium for broodmare service at the end of their racing career, so trainers are unlikely to jeopardize a female runner with a hard campaign.
