[Editor’s note: The above breaking routine is one used by Kentucky trainer John K. Griggs, trainer of champion steeplechaser Warm Spell, along with many other graded stakes winners. It is a fairly standard practice, however, with a few custom differences possible — adding in long-lining, for instance, or round-pen longeing, or taking longer, or shorter, for each step. Most Thoroughbred trainers use some form of this routine for breaking young horses. /
