Richard Valentine agreed. Private trainer for Whitewood Stables in The Plains, Valentine said that the farm’s suckling foals are taught to lead and “act civilized. After they’re weaned, though, they’re turned out in a gang and handled much less,” Valentine said.
Roughing out weanlings, he added, “toughens them up a bit.” Their feet, of course, are still attended, as well as routine worming and vaccinations, but otherwise, ages 6 to 12 months at Whitewood are spent “just being a horse.”
