There had not been racing at the Thornton Hill course for four years; the club built all-new timber fences and slightly altered the track to make more use of a gradual uphill climb to the finish line and create better railside parking.
Making his first attempt over timber, unique to U.S. steeplechasing, Irish native Calvin McCormack prevailed in the maiden timber contest with Tbm Kirlin’s Watch Captain. “I tried to settle him behind, but he was much happier when I let him roll on” in the lead, said McCormack.
Winner of more than 100 steeplechases, riding mostly in England, McCormack said’ he hopes to ride out the fall season here. He is currently based at Richard Valentine’s training stable in The Plains.
