Supervisors urged to
reconsider bus decision
It was \vith dismay that I read of the Board of
Supervisors’ decision to cancel the wonderful Rappahannock Express bus service in the Sept. 11 edition of the Rcippahanmx'k News. I surely hope it will reconsider its decision.
This bus service is a truly beautiful first attempt by Rappahannock County to show compassion toward and awareness of the fact that our rural community contains people with mobility problems.
While it is true that the first version of the plan wasn’t quite right (it required people who by definition had no way to get around to somehow get themselves to a pick-up point), the second version (front-door pickup) is a brilliant revision and is a great, great service for people who otherwise can noj get out of the house at all.
Considering the improved service w as just introduced the other month, the fact that the Board of Supervisors would cancel the Rappahannock Express is especially demoralizing.
Before this bus service it had seemed that we had a community of some 7,000 people sharing a group delusion that we are all “good, able-bodied farmer stock” out here. Which, of course, is far from the case.
If the good folk on the supervisory board are going to persist in their decision (which apparently is based on their perception of the limited monetized value of the 800-odd passengers who have used the service) I have another question for them: when is Rappahannock County going to start getting serious about enforcing any of the provisions of the ADA (Americans With
