Our bank
The other night at dusk we drove by the site of the
new Rappahannock National Bank on Route 211
and our first thought was how out of place it still looks in our scenic rural county. We've watched it being built, and each time we glance over at it, we hope we feel better about it being there.
The fact that it architecturally may be impressive doesn't cut it. nor the fact that the interior has materials to make it look more rustic.
It is what it is, a commercial structure. It sits there as a reminder that more commercial structures may soon appear as that area allows for a commercial district in the county's Comprehensive Plan.
We regret the circumstances that led to our losing this bank in its Town of Washington location where it stood for over 100 years. It should be a lesson we don’t forget. That being said, we have no choice but to make the best of it.
Something Mike Leake said in his interview in today’s paper made us stop and think. And maybe feel better. And it wasn't the three drive-through lanes, extra services, expanded hours or being open on Saturdays.
Leake, who is the bank's president and CEO, reminded us that this is not an outside franchise coming in, it is a local business expanding, one that has a track record of banking service in the county for 101 years. It also provides good jobs for local people.
The next time we look at the bank, we ll remember that too.
