“He won his last race [at the new Rappahannock Hunt course.] It was fitting,” Smithwick said. “But he’s not too happy about being retired. He wants to be back in work. He watches them go out every day to work from his field.”
Smithwick said the older horses are far from slow.
“Oh, they can put in a good buck or too,” Smithwick said. “They will surprise you.”
Smithwick is training another horse with a few years on him for owner-rider Tony Summerlin.
The 12-year-old Seminole Spirt joins the Virginia circuit with lifetime earnings of $101,209. Summerlin hopes he will make a suitable prospect for the owner-rider series.
No matter what the age, Smithwick said, “Its nice to have a horse that can run a little.”
