The perils are great.
Steeplechase racing brings with it a whole new set of challenges. Take racing at upwards of 30 miles per hour, add to it dozens of other horses and riders, undulating turf, varying race conditions, travel, weather factors and more. Unless they are tripped, horses racing on the flat rarely fall. A professional steeplechase jockey knows that, on average, every 12 race rides will end in a spill. Though the perils are great, then, in steeplechasing, the rewards are even greater. There are magnificent trophies and cash prizes on the line, and the friendships are for a lifetime. The thrill of victory seems even greater when tossed with a dash of danger.
