Rappahannock’s elder citizens made public last week at a county Planning Commission hearing reported that the 60 plus age range is the fastest growing segment of the population with the greatest rate of growth among persons 85 years or older. The report also said that the aging population is expected to increase by 45 percent between now and 2010 as the baby boomers begin to turn 60. When asked to comment on McCarthy’s announcement Sallie Morgan, who presented the report last ..week prepared by a group of social service agencies with the Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services Board, said she was pleased to hear about the negotiations for housing for the elderly. “This is really interesting.” She said that one of the conclusions the group came to in its report is there is a need for “affordable and accessible housing for the elderly.” Although this is the first she heard about it, Morgan said, “I think it certainly will be something that is extremely valuable as the elderly population increases. Even people who have homes, their physical needs change as they age.”
