The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community (RAaC) welcomes Rappahannock resident Carla Theodore as guest speaker for the Second Friday at the Library series on March 12 at 8 p.m. at the Rappahannock library.
Theodore, a published poet, rabbi and social activist, will pose the question “Ice Age or Sane Economy?” and will offer some chilling evidence that our current economy is headed toward disaster.
She cites reports that global warming may, of all things, trigger an ice age. Environmentalists have warned of this danger for decades, but a recent report originating from an elite group in the Pentagon has suggested that this could actually happen sooner than previously predicted.
“In any case, we do know that the ever-expanding economy is destroying the bio-sphere upon which we depend for life,” says Theodore. “We don’t like to think about it much because we don’t know what we can do about it.”
Theodore, however, indefatigable in her optimism at age 81, believes it is actually possible to alter the dark destiny that seems to lie ahead. “Our economy, which lies at the root of the problem, is a human institution, she says, “ and we have the power to change it. But we better hurry up.”
