This week my husband Danny, reports some newly found information concerning the July 24, 1863 action at Battle Mountain near Viewtown. Here is what he found.
Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia returned from Gettysburg by using several routes. A large portion of Lee’s troops traveled the Richmond Road ( now Route 729) toward its destination, Culpeper. Near Newby’s Crossroads (now junctions of Routes 729 and 618), a Calvary force under the command of General George Custer traveling from its Amissville camp, ran headlong into the Confederate marching line.
