We started reading to our daughter when she turned one. At first there were a lot of picture books—some fun, some touching, some educational. The stories were simple.
Then she learned to read. And she loved reading as much as we do. Our family habit fed on itself. She read out loud. We continued reading out loud. And she started reading to herself. We all read voraciously.
Through all this we instilled a love of learning and entertaining ourselves (we hope), and we built some shared time in our schedules to listen to each other and enjoy family time.
