WASHINGTON, Va. — Rewind the tape: A year ago, the snowy forecast left trainer Don Yovpnovich perplexed.
Though owner Vicki Fuller purchased the experienced Inca Colony for herself, to ride in the foxhunters’ timber series, job responsibilities as a New York financier combined with frozen, snowy weather to leave Fuller unprepared for her race riding debut. It left Yovanovich with a fit racehorse and no rider.
Enter Tiffany Mueller.
A longtime fellow foxhunter of the trainer, Mueller eagerly took the call on Inca Colony when Yovanovich asked her to fill in for his absentee owner. Inca Colony handily won the foxhunters’ series and launched Mueller into the spotlight as leading novice rider on the Virginia circuit.
Fast-forward a year. Again, Yovanovich found himself with Inca Colony fit from hunting, his owner all but snowbound in her New York home, busy in her demanding profession. With little chance of traveling to Virginia under dodgy hunting conditions to “qualify” for the limited amateur division (riders must hunt at least six times to qualify for the foxhunters’ series), Fuller asked Yovanovich to find another substitute jockey.
