Immediately the Confederates were able to make some dispositions with part of its command to partially surround Custer’s regiments.
The book “ Under Custer’s Command” by Karla Husby, written in 1998, gives a diary account by Pvt. James Avery of the 5th Michigan Calvary. Pvt. Avery’s regiment was in front and experienced the worst part of the fight. Here are his comments in his own words:
