MOMENTS
According to anthropologists, human civilization began the moment that we started to bury our dead. It defined us as wise, rational, thinking beings. Since the beginning, the funeral tradition incorporated a ceremonial act, a special place for the dead to rest, and a memorial. Funeral customs began out of fear of the dead, as well as fear that the deceased’s spirit may return if the body were not disposed of in a respectful manner. Early humans were also fearful that failure to bury the dead according to established custom would fail to appease the higher power that oversaw their daily lives. While much of the fear associated with burial has been replaced with awe and respect, the tradition lives on.
