The CTY awards ceremonies recognize the top scorers in the CTY search. Out of the 14,000 Virginia students who participated in the testing only 4,800 students were invited to attend the special awards ceremony held May 9 at James Madison University in Harrisburg.
Included in the list of topscorers who attended the ceremony were Rappahannock County Elementary School sixth graders Tyler Perren Crews and Michael David Barney, who are in the gifted and talented program offered at RCES.
“We want these bright children to have their day in the limelight for their academic talent and to celebrate their abilities just as we celebrate excellence in athletics or the performing arts,” says Lea Yabara, Ph.D., CTY’s executive director.
“Students recognized for their academic talents begin to define themselves as academic achievers. They also more clearly appreciate that ‘being smart is being cool.’”
