Sherertz asked for a $6,146 supplemental salary for all his deputies and for himself.

At present, the starting salary for Rappahannock’s deputies is $23,854, compared to $30,000 for Culpeper deputies, $28,134 for Warren County’s deputies, and $27,454 for Madison Sheriffs Office deputies.

Sherertz said, “This is not in any way a gift or a windfall. (My deputies) earn this money every day.”

He supported his argument by explaining to the supervisors how in fiscal year 2004, his office had lost five deputies who left for higher salaries elsewhere. This amounted to a financial loss to the county for training these five men of $64,000.
