“I visited a psyche ward in Burlington and a man lay down next to my dog and started talking to her and smiling. I didn’t think too much of it. As I was leaving a woman who worked there approached me and said she had never heard that man speak before. I got chills.”
Petty tells another story of the dog magic at work, and the help a dog can be in physical therapy.
“A woman with the Home Health Agency had a stroke and didn't ever want to leave her bed. I told her that if she got in her wheelchair she could pet my dog. Eventually she was out of bed at every visit and even using her bad arm to pet Maggie.”
To be a part of this fulfilling experience, dogs do not need special training, though they must be over one year of age, healthy, obedient, and of course, loving.
A dog must also pass a series of tests which evaluate the dog’s obedience, cleanliness, and ability to interact with other people and animals.
Testing includes walking quietly on a leash, being stroked and pet all over by Petty, meeting another dog, approaching the dog with a wheelchair, walker, and crutches, and other methods to study the behavior of the dog.
Not all dogs are ready for this job. Petty encourages owners to take their dogs to public places.
