care to listen,” says Boucher of her first outing in a Virginia rodeo in 2002. “She disqualified me in all my events. I was ready to go home. I was so mad. Then she didn’t want to get in the trailer. I was done. But I went back the next weekend.”
Doc, a five-year-old quarter horse gelding, took over when Della pulled her leg about two months ago. Doc did not know the pole patterns and he knew barrels at only a basic level, Boucher says. “But my first race on him, he went to the average of Della’s speed. It just blew everybody away. He’s a keeper.”
At high school, she is alone in her interest in rodeo. “Nobody else does it,” she says, not seeming to mind in the least. “But they are really cool about it. Some of the girls ask me to bring them pictures of the hot cowboys.”
