Probably another cause is our proliferating deer population, which is cleaning out all the low-level cover and foods on which quail and grouse depend. At least, that is true where we live.
So, what’s the remedy? Enforce air quality standards, and get rid of the vestiges of deer-hunting regulations that were born in an era of deer scarcity rather than over-pop- * ulation.
