County library
relies on
volunteers

Some folks may not realize that the Rappahannock County • Library runs on a good deal of volunteer power.
With only three paid staff, the libraiy relies heavily on our 15 volunteers, who contribute over 50 hours a week to the smooth operation of the library. The volunteers work the circulation desk, answer phones, assist patrons, and perform a host of other tasks.
Former librarian Grace Sims gets things started on Mondays, handling the circulation desk from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Come in on a Tuesday and meet our newest volunteer, Kathy Poush. Although retired now, Kathy was a librarian in another life, and we’re fortunate to have her expertise.
Wednesdays it’s Sam McDermott in the afternoon and Preston Angell in the evening. Retired children’s librarian Stella Clark helps out with the shelving on Wednesdays as well.
Thursdays you’ll find Maureen Harris in the mornings and Lee Bird handling the afternoon shift.
While Barbara Kiley works the circulation desk on Fridays, Dorothy Kuncewicz continues the never-ending task of weeding and shifting books. Howard Ziemer takes over the desk on Friday afternoons.
The front desk isn’t the only place volunteers help out. Min Jumak takes care of covering new books, while Tbd Morgan has taken on the task of book repair. Tbd is also indispensable in keeping our aging IBMs up and running.
A special thanks is in order for John Schultz. John was steady as a rock on Monday evenings and all day each Tuesday. John has moved out of the county, and he’ll be missed at the library. Incidentally, the library is in need of a volunteer for Mondays from 4 to 8 p.m. Those interested should contact library director David Shaffer at 675-3780.
Thanks also to Bruce Wetteroth for his help with various maintenance projects, and Carol Dean, who has recently taken the Jamieson Room kitchen under her wing.
These volunteers, together with the generous aid of the Friends of the Library, truly demonstrate the power of community spirit. So thanks to all of you who have done so much to make our library a welcoming place - your efforts are very much appreciated.
