"Degarding Bruce Jones’ artiJLVcle on the bobwhite quail in the June 3 edition of the Rappahannock News, I too lament the loss of quail from the area.
When I was a boy shooting doves I would sometimes walk up on a covey of quail and they would explode into the air with a frightening roar. Without a bird dog to point them out, the hunter does not even have time to raise his shotgun before the birds zoom out of range. Invariably I would be left standing there panting with excitement with the breech and magazine of my gun full of unfired shells.
On my farm in Castleton I have begun to kill the fescue grass and replace it with clover. Clover won’t grow tall enough to hide quail from the wily fox, yet it provides food for deer and turkey while controlling soil erosion. Wildlife biologists complain that the only animal that likes to eat fescue is the omnipresent cow.
