school costs
For years, there was a less than optimum working relationship between the Board of Supervisors and the school system. Last year the school saw a different relationship. This was fostered by many people inside and outside of the system — "stakeholders” who believed the time had come to stop hurting kids with political meandering.
Citizens have every right to expect fiscal responsibility and a reckoning of where their money is being allocated. Debate and questioning is not going to solve the perception that schools cost too much money. Education of our citizenry might be a good place to start. We do not enjoy the luxury of an economy of scale in this county. When the school needs a bus or a building or a track, the cost gets spread over a thousand kids or so.
In surrounding counties, that cost might be spread over 5,000 or 10,000 or even 20,000 kids. The bus costs the same either place. We are a “rich” county with a high “ability to pay” or so the state says.
