Sherertz read from an article in the March 27 Culpeper Star-Exponent in which Culpeper Police Captain Rick Pinksaw was quoted as saying, “We got a steal,” when they hired Deputy J.C. Welch away from Rappahannock last year for more money.
And Culpeper Police Captain Chris Jenkins added insult to injury, saying in the same article, “Rappahannock’s loss is our gain.”
Sherertz told the supervisors, “That’s the way it’s been going. I’m playing the role of a junk yard dog telling sheriffs in neighboring counties to back off (from trying to hire away his deputies).”
Later in his presentation he said, “I would like you to keep in mind, we cannot continue to train people only to have them go down the road. We are not competitive (in Rappahannock County), and that is what this is all about. I don’t want Rappahannock to become a journeyman’s office of deputies.”
