Afghanistan by the Soviets has exacerbated the crisis in modern times. Superimpose on this scene the complicated relationships of Turkey, the Kurds, Iran, Syria, and Iraq, the root causes of which reach far back. Add poverty, ignorance, and hopelessness of many Muslims to understand their vulnerability to proposals of violent action. We should take great care in entering that arena.
This intensity of feeling exploded in our faces on Sept. 11, 2001 and we reacted in self-defense. Should that have included an attack and occupation of Iraq?
