The consultants hired to help revise the Town of Washington's Historic District Ordinance advised the Planning Commission on Monday that they planned to make the town a leader in preservation in Virginia.
“In the last week, Hank Day and I have decided were going to work on the Washington Historic Ordinance as a model that may be used across the state,” said Cheryl H. Shepherd of Millennium Preservation Services m Warrenton.
Day, also of Warrenton, was the attorney who represented the town in the Worley suit, settled out of court on Sept. 20 for $75,000.
In Worley v. Town of Washington, Sid and Mary Catherine Worley sought to have the existing Historic District Ordinance declared invalid and unenforceable. The dispute arose over what type of building materials are appropriate for use in the town.
Planning Commissioner Gary Schwartz noted that the Historic District Ordinance was also part of the - five-year review of Washington's Comprehensive Plan which is also in progress.
