Some people attend because they have been given the workshop as a gift from a family member or a friend. Others attend because they want to write and are not sure how to go about it. Portman tells the story about a grandmother who was given the gift of a workshop. Her initial statement was that she didn’t know what she was doing at a writing workshop because she said, “The only thing I’ve ever written is my name on a check.” Upon completing the workshop the woman was amazed at the number of stories that she had told and written. She continues to proudly announce this accomplishment to her family and friends.
