At that point, he moves to a light table, manipulating the oil color on a sheet of clear acrylic plastic. By working with the density of the ink, he also works with the values in the print, thus manipulating the shadows and light to draw the viewer into an evanescent world.
Trained as an architectural historian, Hill had a 20 year career in historic preser vation. At age 40. he took up printmaking at the Richmond Printmaking workshop and set up his own studio in Richmond When he found he was traveling farther and father west in pursuit of print ideas, he said he “followed the monotypes” and in 1990, moved to Madison County at the foot of Old Rag Mountain.
