“There have been no charges brought at this time,” he said in answer to a question.

“We moved the inmates out so that we could undergo a complete security renovation on that cellblock,” said Sherertz. “We are always proactive when we see an issue that needs to be addressed.”

Built in 1835 for $2,600, the Rappahannock County jail is the oldest in the state. The facility is rated for seven prisoners, but Sherertz says he has had as many, as 28. Approximately 20 inmates were being housed in the jail on that Friday night.

“Because this is such an old building,” explained Sherertz, “we sometimes need to move inmates to a facility where they can be managed more closely and with greater security.”
