During World War II, Clay Rankin was active in the Fauquier County “plane spotting” group, and belonged to one of the local militia units, according to Jim. And his interest in all things military continued.
We were living at Opal, and convoys of troops moved through all the time,” recalled Jim Rankin. “If they stopped nearby for chow, my Dad would always go over and talk with them.”
Clay Rankin continued farming in Fauquier County, but he also helped the war effort by working at the old Tbrpedo Factory in Alexandria.
