Sherertz said that local sheriff’s departments swap prisoners all the time as they try to address overcrowding, and underfunding.
All seven of the inmates moved on Oct. 29 were in the jail because of crimes committed in Rappahannock County. Some were awaiting trials for additional crimes committed in other counties as well.
“What we are doing now is preventive maintenance,” said Sherertz. “It’s a small, antique facility and things can go wrong when that is coupled with it being such a high traffic area.”
Sherertz added that when the cellblock B renovations were complete, he plans to move the female inmates out of cellblock A and renovate that area as well.
“I would be derelict in my obligations to the safety of the public and that of my employees if I didn’t address these issues,” said Sherertz.
The sheriff hopes to have the B block renovations complete within the next three weeks.
