Licensing
Virginia law stipulates that everyone “must purchase the proper licenses before hunting or trapping.” Landowners and their immediate families are exempt, however. So are tenants who receive the landowner’s permission to hunt on the land where they live.
The exemptions also apply to residents age 65 and older; and children up to 11 years old who are accompanied and supervised by a licensed adult.
Youths (ages 12-15) or anyone 16 and older who has never received a hunting license must complete hunter education courses in order to obtain a license. The two-day courses, such as the one held at the Fauquier County Fairgrounds last weekend, are sponsored by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
