According to indictments, the spam was sent between July j 11 and Aug. 9, 2003, on three separate occasions. The indictment alleged Jaynes falsified routing information, making it impossible for e-mail recipients to view the correct sender of the e-mail.
Jaynes, who was known at the time of his arrest in December 2003 as “Gaven Stubberfield,” ran a “snake oil business” online from his Raleigh, N.C., home, prosecutors said. They said he used his sister and Rutowski to funnel the money.
“It’s great news. These are the first convictions of their kind anywhere in the world,” Murtaugh said. “This sends a message that we’re not joking.”
Jaynes and Degroot will be sentenced if Judge Home upholds their convictions.
