Hearthstone School
Hearthstone, students have been enjoying the exploration of stream life in their front and back yards. Water monitoring began in the river with upper grade science classes collecting data and analyzing water quality with teacher Jesse Reynolds. The nursery/kindergarten classes enjoyed catching crayfish, exploring the banks of the wetland area while discovering frog eggs and observing plant life that is coming up.
Hearthstone will offer an Open House to the community on April 24 from 12 - 3 p.m. Located on Rt. 211 just 2 miles west of the town of Spenyville, all are welcome to come for a visit, talk with teachers about the curriculum, enjoy a walk around the grounds, and have questions answered about enrollment, Waldorf philosophy, and the plans being initiated for the growth of the school. Battle of the Books
Competition
The Rappahannock 6-8 grade Battle of the Books teams recently attended their first competition for this year on April 8, 2005. This competition was the Piedmont Open at Culpeper Middle School. Fourteen team members were divided into three teams. The Beasties team consisted of Gavin Forrest, Austin Burnett, Caroline Massie, and Megan Wheatley. The Panthers team included Jessica Bowman, Kristin Taylor, Tyler Crews, Joe Vickers, and Brittany Clatterbuck. The Bobcats team was comprised of Mairead McLaughlin, Allie Dor}), Taylor Light, Sarah Wheatley, and Fabian von Feilitzsch.
While the Rappahannock teams didn’t place in the top three out of 13, they entertained their attending staff and families with their knowledge of the 19 books that were quizzed throughout the four rounds. Since August, these students have read, discussed, and quizzed each other on the 19 books on the Battle of the Books list. Mrs. Lilo Wolfe and Mrs. Barbara Wheatley are the sponsors for the Rappahannock Battle of the Books teams.
The next Piedmont Battle of the Books competition will be held at Warrenton Middle School on April 29, 2005. The Wakefield Battle of the Books on May 22, 2005 will be the final competition for these
