1984 when he purchased the establishment from his cousin Clarence Baldwin.
Paul Baldwin had originally planned to open a fast food joint in North Carolina where he already owned property, but he said it was the mountains that lured his family into settling in Rappahannock Comity.
His wife, known to all as Cookie, has always been drawn to retail. “I used to sell home made coconut candies at a bus stop in Vietnam,” said Cookie.
As a birthday present, and as a way to fulfill her dreams to own a retail business, Paul bought his wife the shop. “She didn’t have enough work so I bought her some,” chuckled Paul. “We also bought it to get to know the Rappahannock people and now it seems like we even know their middle initials,” added Baldwin laughing.
It was not until November of 1984 that the store reopened for business under its new ownership. “I wanted to modernize the store, but also keep it as original as possible,” said Baldwin.
Concerned about shutting down the store during the remodeling process for fear of loosing customers, Paul decided to remodel and stay open at the same time. Baldwin and his wife smiled as they reminisced about hanging up sheets to hide the parts of the store being worked on. The couple put the drink machines on rollers so they could move things around at night to free up another area that needed work. The store has three doors and Paul would systematically lock one and open another according to where he wanted customers to enter and not disrupt the ongoing work.
“People started making bets on which door I was going to have them come in the next day,” said Paul. Cookie added that they were both so pleased when customers kept coming and did not seem to be disturbed by the indoor construction project as the two laid
