Growth rate
Trees that are fast growing are more desirable to people than moderate growth rates because they provide shade quickly, screen from the wind, or block unpleasant views. However, these trees are more prone to breaking and storm damage. These trees also live a shorter time than a tree with more modest growth rates.
Trees with modest growth rates can be encouraged to grow more rapidly than normal if trees are selected for quality, planted properly, get adequate water and are fertilized regularly.
Root structure
Roots provide support, nutrients and water for the plant. Certain tree species are more prone to surface and -invasive roots. These can create problems in lawns for mowing, invade sewer lines, and cause sidewalks or driveways to crack.
