The Rappahannock County Public School Board met Tuesday April 12 for their scheduled monthly meeting.
The main issue of the night was a recent construction project, toting a price tag of $1.4 million dollars higher than originally budgeted.
The School Board has spent the past week reviewing two options. One is to remove an auxiliary gym from construction plans, the second is to delete a track upgrade and classroom additions.
Superintendent Bob Chappell read aloud his recommendation. “The board has determined on the advice of counsel that it will make a procurement for construction under the sole source provisions of the Virginia Procurement Act and that there is only one source available to do the work.”
According to Chappell, there are numerous reasons for this situation, including that there were only three construction firms that purchased bid documents; of those three only one submitted a bid. The sole bidder, Lantz Construction of Winchester, agreed to meet the time requirements needed to complete the roof of Rappahannock County Elementary School (RCES).
Chappell also advised the board that it is important to install the RCES air-conditioning as soon as possible, and finally stated, “The sole bidder has indicated a willingness to work with subs to try to reduce the price of the gym and the RCES addition to a level acceptable to the Board.”
The new contract will allow for the construction of the RCES roof, the electrical upgrade, and HVAC upgrade and will come to $2,353,670. $38,600 will be subtracted from this total because the storm water system will be paid for separately by the county. The new total of the construction project comes to $2,315,070.
