9. Do not over-fertilize. Azaleas need only low nitrogen fertilizer, preferably organic products designed for acid-loving plants like Hollytone and cottonseed meal. 10. Azaleas have few insect pests. If leaves develop a bronze cast, turn them over and look for a tarry substance, indicating the presence of lacebugs. If the leaves turn whitish, suspect spider mites. Both pests are readily controlled.
