A primaiy focus of the department is on prevention of child abuse. Often families may be experiencing problems, which if handled early can prevent escalation into more serious situations. “We try to provide services to stop abuse from becoming a problem,” said Leathers.
These preventative measures often take place in the school where teachers are mandated by the state to report any signs of an abused child. The law does not require Child Protective Services to seek parental permission before interviewing a child.
