A collection of letters written over the years by a grandfather to his granddaughter has been benefiting children all over Rappahannock County, children the author never even met. Former Rappahannock resident and editor of the Richmond News Leader, James J. Kilpatrick, known to many as James J., Jack, or sometimes Kilpo, wrote 21 letters to his granddaughter, Heather, beginning with her birth in 1970. The letters, which were originally printed in Kilpa.Tick’s widely syndicated newspaper column, “A Conservative View”, were collected and reprinted by Headwaters, the Rappahannock County Public Education Foundation.
Kilpatrick’s daughter-inlaw, Sharon, had the idea of collecting all the letters to Heather in a book for some time. In addition to appearing in his newspaper columns, some of the letters were also included in the book, “The Foxes Union” which is now out of print. As one of the members of the first Board of Directors of Headwaters, which was launched in 1997, Sharon obtained Kilpo’s permission to put out the book as a benefit for Headwaters.
