It's getting closer but it's not quite there yet in the matter of the DeBergh subdivision access road and just who will maintain it.
After much debate, on a motion made by Mayor Eugene Leggett, the council voted unanimously to accept state maintenance of the toad only from the Wheeler and Gay Street intersection to the subdivision entrance, subject to the submission of a new plan to be approved by the town. The roads within the subdivision will be built and maintained by the developer. The subdivision’s owner earlier agreed to build the extended street within the town’s right-of-way to their property according to state specifications.
The principal business of the Tfawn Council meeting held Wednesday evening, July 13, was to seek agreement among council members and between the various parties (James DeBergh, the Town of Washington, VDOT, and adjacent landowners) for an acceptable plan of access to the DeBergh subdivision.
Although the subdivision is located in the county and outside the town boundaries, its access will be through Wheeler Street extended over which the town has jurisdiction.
In its original request to VDOT, the town requested only that the state agency agree to maintain the “Wheeler Street extension” (some 223 feet of street to the entrance of the DeBergh subdivision). Surprisingly, VDOT offered to maintain
