Things change in the fall, however. The queen begins to lay unfertilized eggs that develop into males; fertile females are also produced. The males do no defending (they are stingless) or any other work around the nest. Instead, they spend their time eating and searching for females to mate with. Around the nests, the orderly activities observed during the summer months deteriorate as the newly emerged fertile females concentrate on mating and starting their own nests. Both males and females spend most of their time eating and storing up energy for the long winter months
