the full road from the intersection of Gay Street to the last property in the cul de sac. At first, it appeared this was a very attractive offer.
In the end, however, to allow the town to maintain control of the road in the future, the town’s attorney, John Bennett, advised that it would be more advantageous for the town to go back to the original request that VDOT maintain only the dedicated road within the 40-foot right-of-way.
Things to think about
Several issues of concern about the new street were raised during the council's consideration of this matter. One was the possible difficulty of navigating a turn into the street because of its angle, especially for large trucks and emergency vehicles. Another concern is the “lay of the land” in the right-of-way that runs out from the very edge of Diane Bruce’s home 40 feet to the right. Drainage could be a problem and water runoff would have to be considered: The actual travel portion of the road only needs some 18 to 20 feet.
VDOT representatives, members of the Town Council, and Diane Bruce as the adjoining landowner most affected by this development will meet on July 29th to flag and stake the road so everyone will have a clearer idea of what is being proposed and approved.
