Fire claims life

of elderly man

An unidentified Amissville man died in a house fire last Thursday morning. The Culpeper Sheriffs Office Sgt. Jim Fox said identification of the victim could take months due to a lab backlog of DNA analysis.

The medical examiner performed an autopsy last Friday. The sheriff’s office didn’t release the cause of death. On Feb. 16, volunteer firefighters from Little Fork, Amissville and Warrenton responded to the 4:30 a.m. fire at 4266 Indian Run Rd. in the northwestern part of the county near the Rappahannock County line. The man’s body was found in the “first floor living area near the stairwell,” said Little Fork Assistant Fire Chief Lee Monaco.

“The individual was alone,” added Culpeper Sheriff Lee Hart. The blaze had already engulfed the home when volunteer firefighters arrived 11 minutes after the initial call. Debris in the driveway and the driveway5s deteriorated condition hampered efforts to move firefighting equipment near the 1898 twostory, wood-framed farmhouse.

Firefighters ferried water in tankers to the scene to fight the blaze. The cause remains unknown. The fire appeared to have started at the rear of the house, said Asst. Chief Monaco.Sheriff Hart didn’t suspect arson, but a sheriffs office investigator responded to the scene.
