Winter Fruit
Tree Pruning Fruit trees require pruning each year to help ensure quality fruit and proper form. Winter is an ideal time to perform this work while the trees are dormant. Dead, dying and diseased twigs and branches must be removed to help eliminate pests that over-winter on dead tissue. Thinning to reduce crown density improves the size and quality of fruit. It also increases light penetration and air circulation within the crown, which aids ripening in summer, and reduces disease. Reducing crown density also allows better coverage for insect and disease treatments applied during the growing season.
