located at Hawlin (about V6 mile past Montpelier on Hawlin Rd), Huntly (about Yi mile east of current US 522 just off Little Long Mt. Rd), Washington (across from current Baldwin’s grocery on Big Branch, and named for that stream), Amissville (on Poe’s Rd just north of the intersection with RT 645), and Smedley (now the Gid Brown Bible Church in Gid Brown Hollow). In the late 1920s, another at Peola Mills, which served both Rappahannock and Madison Counties, replaced the Hawlin School.
A one-room primitive log school was also constructed at Scrabble on the east side of US 522 about Vi mile north of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church though shortly thereafter a ‘Rosenwald’ school replaced it.
In the 1920s Julius Rosenwald president of Sears, Roebuck, established a foundation with the objective of erecting schools for black children. A series of standardized architectural plans were developed. These plans, together with partial funding from the Rosenwald Foundation would lead to over 5000 black schools in the Southern states over the next 15 years.
