This month we will take a look at window treatments. There are two major types to consider. Hard window treatments refer to things like blinds, shutters, and shades. Soft window treatments are made of fabrics and refer to things like draperies and top treatments like valances, swags, and cascades. Hard and soft window treatments can be used separately or in combination with each other. This article will be solely about soft window treatments, and next month’s edition will review the current plethora of choices of hard window treatments.
Having said that, window treatments still may not always be necessary. Many of my clients in Rappahannock County have beautiful mountain views and would never want a drapery to cover their vistas. Another reason not to use a window treatment would be to emphasize a style. Some decorating styles lend themselves to the bare window look, especially a contemporary or a “farm house casual” look, where wood work is the desired feature.
Window treatments are definitely called for in situations where privacy or light control is necessary. Often the decor of a room calls for a certain type of drapery. There are many elements to consider. What determines how much one should spend on window treatments?
