Music has always filled our hills and hollows, and now businesses on Main Street and the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Hall on Route 211 seem to be increasingly booking diverse groups for us.
Okuda Jazz
Quartet
On Jan. 17 and 31 at 6:30 p.m. the delightful Okuda Jazz Quartet will again return to Stonewall Abbey Cafe. Their instrumentation is piano, bass, drums and saxophone and you will hear swing, blues, funk, Latin and more.
You may recall that one of the musicians, Doss Allen, is a graduate of Rappahannock County High School and is studying at Shenandoah University. This group will play at private parties, so come to preview them for your event while enjoying some good soup and sandwiches from the Abbey.
Whiskey Wagon
Put Saturday, Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m. on your calendar and get ready to stomp your feet, clap your hands and dance to the music of Whiskey Wagon at Stonewall Abbey. Irish folk music on Main Street in an old church building that was once a bookstore definitely will bring to life a small village on a cold January night.
Eddie Fuller, main vocalist, plays about every kind of percussion instrument that you can find. You will soon read about his 260-pound drum that he has been making since March 2008 from an old tree that came down on Red Oak Mountain. Meaghan Deakins not only sings and plays multiple instruments, but also is the founder of an original dance group “Qeltic Gypsies” and is a Web site designer. Rae’s Place
Don’t forget that Rae's welcomes all who want to participate in open mike on Thursday evenings. This Thursday is the last Open Mic Night until February.
Rae is closing Friday, Jan. 16 and will reopen Feb. 2 with Open Mic on Feb. 5. There has been a great turnout and it’s lots of fun to hear so many different local talents. What a wonderful place to live. Chris Moyles is host (from Rude Rock Family), 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. (approximately) every Thursday. The following Saturday, Feb. 7, there will be a pre-Valentine’s Day celebration with live music. Spring- Hope- Renewal are just around the comer, so come this Thursday (Jan. 15> and then help start the new season of music Feb. 5.
