Rappahannock County Public Schools are facing a $400,000 reduction in state aid for fiscal year 2010, said School Superintendent Dr. Bob Chappell at Tuesday night’s school board meeting.
The reduction in aid is a result of fewer sales taxes collected, said Chappell, but he also said he was “very disappointed” in the education cuts coming from Virginia Governor Tim Kaine who ran a campaign promising strong support for education.
The county is also dealing with two handicaps in determining state allotments in that the county has a high composite index - a measure used to determine funding amounts - and higher actual enrollment numbers than were used to determine budget amounts.
As a comparison, Page County gets about 50 percent of its budget from the state while Rappahannock County gets only 20 percent, said Chappell.
Some $100,000 in state money was allocated to Rappahannock school construction last year, whereas this year there are no projects which will account for part of the budget cuts said Chappell, but the board is still going to have to make cuts from a budget that has already been shaved down to bare bones.
