The grant - a part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program legislated by Congress in 2001 - was the successful result of an effort by Carter who had written for the grant twice before but was denied.
Richie Burke, E-911 coordinator for Rappahannock County, has been working with the contractor, Motorola, and both Fauquier and Culpeper counties to get the new 800 MHz system up and running. Rappahannock will tie into their systems and use relay towers in both counties.
“This will greatly improve our communication ability by putting more radios into the hands of emergency crews "Burke said.
With a new tower in Culpeper coming on line soon, and enough radios (as a result of the AFG grant) to equip everybody, the new system will be 100 percent operational, according to Burke.
